Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit, and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission: “Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water in the word.” CCC 1213
The sacrament of baptism is necessary in the economy of salvation. Therefore we offer many avenues for baptism.
For children under the age of 6
If the family are registered parishioners of Holy Family Cathedral, we ask that you speak with a priest and arrange a meeting to go over what baptism entails. Two godparents, but at least one must be a Confirmed and practicing Catholic, must be present for this meeting as well.
If you are not registered parishioners of Holy Family Cathedral but come to Holy Family Cathedral, we can register you as parishioners when you call.
If you are not registered at any parish, we would love to talk to you more about what baptism is and what you can do for your children.
If you are registered at another parish, we highly recommend you have the baptism at your local parish. If you still consider this as the place of baptism, whether your family is closer to Holy Family Cathedral or you are in transition, we will talk to you about what is involved in baptism here.
For Children between the ages of 7 and 16
Children or teenagers who have not been baptized enter the process known as the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults adapted for Children. The process starts in September, and normally the sacraments of initiation are celebrated at the Easter Vigil or later. Early registration for the special class for the rites of initiation begins in May, with final registration late August. Please speak with Toni Berkenbush for more information about this.

For Adults 17 or older
Adults seeking Baptism or full communion with the Catholic Church enter the process known as the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA). This program, year-long or longer, covers the basics of Catholicism from doctrine to practice, including the Creed, sacraments, moral life in Christ, and prayer. Emphasis is given to building a long-lasting relationship with our Lord through liturgical celebrations. RCIA meets Tuesdays at 7 PM starting in September.

For Emergency Baptisms at the Point of Death
Please call our office at any hour of the day or night. If you call after office hours, a phone service will give us the message immediately and you should receive a return phone call in minutes. If there is any delay, please remember the following. Because of the necessity of baptism, any person can baptize. Take some clean water (it does not have to be holy water) and pour it over the head of the person three times as you say these words: “[Name of person], I baptize you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” After this is over, please call our offices to let us know.
Baptism is only given once, yet because it is so necessary for salvation we leave nothing up to chance. There are only two forms for baptism, both forms involve the Trinitarian formula (the mention of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit). If you have any doubts about your baptism, please call us about it. If you are seeking to enter the Catholic Church, but have been baptized Christian in another denomination, we would love to talk to you about what the next steps are.
