Music Ministry

Cantors   •   Gavin Duncan, 276-3455

The ministry of the cantor is an integral component of the sung celebration of Sunday Mass. A good candidate for this ministry will possess a knowledge of (or willingness to learn) the sung parts of the Mass – ordinary chants and dialogues, have at least a rudimentary ability to read music, and be familiar enough with the workings of the human voice to control his or her natural vibrato when singing. This rewarding ministry requires a commitment to weekly preparation and rehearsal with the music director.

Solemn Mass Choir   •   Gavin Duncan, 276-3455

This choir is open to all members of the community and sings at the 9:30 AM Sunday Mass, as well as at other special liturgies throughout the Church year. The repertoire of the Solemn Mass Choir spans the centuries and features the great works of every age, with a special emphasis on Gregorian Chant, referred to by the Second Vatican Council as a “Treasury of inestimable value, greater even than any other art.” An ability to read music is not necessary, but you must be willing to learn! This ministry requires a time commitment of at least three hours per week. Choir practice is on Thursday nights at 7 PM in the church

The Dominican Rite Schola Cantorum   0149   Gavin Duncan, 276-3455

This choir is open to all members of the community by audition and sings at the Dominican Rite Mass, both on Sundays and for other special liturgies as required. The Schola Cantorum’s musical focus is placed most heavily on the ancient chants of the Dominican Order, which precede the reform of Gregorian Chant by the monks of Solesmes. Other works from the broader Roman Catholic musical heritage are also performed. This ministry requires a time commitment of at least three hours per week. Choir practice is on

Friday nights at 7 PM in the church.
