In the ecclesial service of the ordained minister, it is Christ himself who is present to his Church as Head of his Body, Shepherd of his flock, high priest of the redemptive sacrifice, Teacher of Truth. This is what the Church means by saying that the priest, by virtue of the sacrament of Holy Orders, acts in persona Christi Capitis – CCC 1548
Holy Orders as a sacrament ensures the continuity of the other sacraments and develops a tangible, visible idea of the Church. In order for vocations to the priesthood and religious life to grow, we need the whole parish, not just the called. Every person is obligated to the spiritual work of mercy to “counsel the doubtful.” When we see someone who would make a good priest or religious, we must encourage them as St. Paul exhorts, “encourage one another and build one another up” (1 Thes. 5:11).
